Comprehension questions to ask while reading a fiction book:
1. What is the setting of the story?
2. Who is the protagonist?
3. What is his/her/their greatest wish?
4. Who or what gets in their way? This is the antagonist.
5. What event in the story begins the conflict? This is called the inciting force.
6. Tell me the events that deal with the protagonist, their greatest wish and the antagonist. This is called the rising action.
7. What is the climax of the story? This is the point in the action where it becomes so intense a change must occur!!
8. What events explain the solution( how the protagonist gets or doesn’t get what they want) These are the closing events of the story. Usually there are only 1-3 events in the falling action.
9. Tell me how you felt about the book. Use one of the bold literary terms above on which to base your opinion.

Writing
- Write Write Write! Keep everything you write in a notebook. Bring it to the first day of fourth grade so I can see it! Or you can email me a written piece (see email above) Here are some website to help.

- Write emails and letters to family and friends.
- You write the grocery list for your parents (they tell you what to write… )
- GO TO A PLAY! Write a play and act it out for friends and family.

Find a pen pal to write letters back and forth and actually send them! Who doesn't love getting mail and it is a great practice for a specific genre of writing and also addressing the envelopes. It could be a friend who moved away, a cousin in another town or state, or an aunt or uncle/grandma or grandpa that live farther away.
Math
KNOW your math facts for addition and subtraction and you should be comfortable with multiplication and division. By 5th grade you should KNOW your multiplication and division facts as well. Check out these highly rated math games to practice math skill:

Have your student make a lemonade stand or help at a garage sale. It is great practice with mental math and applying it to money skills. In 4th grade we talk a lot about economy and deal with money on a daily basis.
Make sure that you freshen up on your fractions. Fraction Coop is a great app to play on tablets.

- to the zoo and look at different animals and their classifications and learn about their natural habitats
- camping and study different animals you come across and look at the stars and sky, look up different constellations on the internet or in a book
- outside at night and study the stars and the moon and how they change each night
- get supplies to grow your own plant or vegetable this summer and find out what the plant needs to survive
- see some musicals to prepare for the 4th Grade Play!!!
